Sometimes the conventional wisdom doesn’t work as well as we’d like. Consider how we protect ourselves from pathogens. Intuitively, we believe the right choice is to destroy as many bacteria and viruses as possible. We’ve spent the last hundred-plus years using various chemicals – and a good bit of scrubbing – to kill microbes: soaps, detergents, bleach, quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) and oxidizers. This seemed like a good approach.

Unfortunately, we can’t poison our way to clean. Microbes produce a biological matrix, or biofilm, that protects them from chemical cleaners and can shelter bacteria and viruses.

As a result, despite our best efforts, we are still dealing with dangerous pathogen outbreaks. In fact, these pathogens have become even more virulent, learning to resist our standard measures. Essentially, by sticking with an outdated solution, we have been throwing good money after bad.

But now, with more than a century of evidence, we have finally learned: To defeat biofilm, we must partner chemistry with biology.

So what’s the new strategy against pathogens? Rather than poisoning them, we simply outcompete them – with probiotics.

Probiotics are non-pathogenic (i.e., good) bacteria that cover surfaces and make it difficult for dangerous pathogens to gain a toehold. Z Bioscience has combined bioengineered probiotics with enzymes to neutralize biofilm. The good bacteria simply take over a surface, reducing biofilm and blocking pathogenic microbes.
